Okay, I’m gonna have to throw this down because the mob mentality is bothering me.
First off, let me show you guys an article just so we can dispel some of these nasty rumors floating around:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324787004578493130789235150.html
“Yahoo has agreed to pay $1.1 billion in cash for the company, one of the people said. Tumblr would continue to operate largely as an independent business, the people said.”
The only thing that Yahoo is doing is picking it up as a platform to insert a few ads here and there. As far as changing the layout, search bar, everything else I’ve seen. Show me one article from at least one legitimate that says those are actually true. At large in every article I’ve read, this is Yahoo’s attempt at being cool, they’re almost in this case acquiring Tumblr so that they can seem cool and Tumblr’s David Karp agreed because Yahoo can do something for the site that is actually pretty important as a whole AND to keep it running. Tumblr NEEDS the money. Tumblr as a majority is a free service with one or two ads that sometimes we don’t even notice. But the fact of the matter in this case is that Tumblr and it’s investors notice.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/19/yahoo-tumblr-purchase-app_n_3303013.html
“Meanwhile, Tumblr has been under increased pressure from investors to start generating a profit. The site, founded by CEO David Karp in 2007, brought in only $13 million in revenue in 2012. Karp’s goal was to make $100 million in revenue in 2013.”
People forget that in reality, in the grand scheme of things, tumblr is STILL a company. A pull in revenue for any major company that’s attached to a site as big or as popular this site makes, such as facebook or twitter makes at least an upwards of 50 times as much as $13 million. Heck that’s actually hardly enough to deal in the professional markets nowadays, which Tumblr actually at least from a monetary stand point doesn’t seem to do well with. It’s PR and such though. Amazing, great. But when it gets down to the bare bones of things, Tumblr IS a business, Karp needs money to pay employees, deal with partners and investors and garner advertisements. So personally this is a good thing because Yahoo HAS the connects, money, and ad partners to help benefit Tumblr.
Secondly, the reason for the purchase being only $1.1 billion, which makes cringe saying only $1.1 billion. Is because Yahoo NEEDS Tumblr, yes big old Yahoo needs us. Why? Because we’re the demographic they WANT to hit. That’s also the reason why they are keeping most if not all operational things and dohickies WITH Karp and tumblr, they DON’T want to fuck up like they did with the other companies. In this way it’s more of a partner ship so that Tumblr can actually reach and pass its revenue and Yahoo can reach us. Us, the hipsters, the fandoms, the anime bloggers, the music fans, content creators. They want to reach us, they want to better themselves as a company and show we can trust them to not change anything and reach us. Yeah yeah there’ll be a couple ads popping up on your dash, but not to the degree everyone is making it to be.
Now lastly for all you porn enthusiasts and I suppose this can apply to people who have or use copyrighted content on this site, don’t lie I know some of you do, heck we all have at one point or another.
http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-05-17/if-yahoo-buys-tumblr-what-will-it-do-with-all-that-porn
“Yahoo’s terms of service also warn users that they might encounter adult material in the company’s products, although it does so without using profanity. And like any service that includes user-generated content, Yahoo has had to deal with people indulging in sexual interests that not everyone would approve of.
But considering that Yahoo is ostensibly interested in Tumblr for the advertising, it’s hard to see the environment getting any friendlier for pornographers on the network. On the other hand, Yahoo may have to tread carefully with suggestive content. There are reasons why Tumblr is popular with young people. Prudishness is not high on that list.”
Yahoo ALSO warns within the terms of service that users on their sites other than Tumblr must be wary that there will be essentially porn involved on their sites. And the rumor is that with Yahoo will bring stricter regulations. I scoff at that and say hardly because they are aware that there are people who in some cases use this site just for adult content. They don’t want to disrupt that, most they’ll do is make sure there’s a NSFW sticker slapped on it. They’re aware of our standards and what we do, they don’t want to disrupt that because that’ll ruin not only Tumblr but Yahoo as well. The same goes for copyrighted content. That won’t change either, we don’t make cash off it and neither does Tumblr.
Finally, please PLEASEremember that this is a business venture so Tumblr can improve and ultimately keep running.
Sincerely,
Someone who’s sick of the mob mentality and remembers that if tumblr doesn’t reach its projected revenue earnings, we may not have this site that brought us all together AT ALL

I took a 7 week coast to coast road trip after being laid off from Boeing. I didn’t have a camper but realized that being able to pull off the road at a rest or truck stop was the way to go to make the trip affordable. With a few sheets of 1/2” plywood and misc. hardware this is what I came up with. The effort was well worth the time and materials.
